A group of young people approached CaVSA wanting to know how to set up an organisation to address some needs of other young people from a BMER community, including issues of under-achievement in education, unemployment, health and anti-social behaviour which they felt no one was addressing. They had been meeting regularly as a group for some months discussing these issues and organising small events on a voluntary basis. They now wanted to take this further.

How did CaVSA help?
At CaVSA we supported the organisation by signposting them to courses we deliver as well as external training providers. We met with the committee to make certain they were clear about the need to have committee meetings and the importance of policy development. We also put the organisation in contact with ACAS and PEACE who were able to provide them with in depth advice and support.

The management committee is now more aware that whilst it is important to deliver services to the community it is equally important to make certain that good practice exist in all areas of the organisations management and service delivery to the sector.
A group came to CaVSA recently because they had been told that they needed to produce a budget forecast to accompany their grant application. The group were bemused as to what this actually meant, what it involved and where they needed to start.
How did CaVSA help?
Firstly the group were asked to think about what they spent money on for the organisation. It was established that they pay rent for the venue they use, a bit of postage to sent information out, buy food and drinks for resale to their members etc. By the end of this process we had produced a list of their expenditure for the year. Next we looked at the income side of their group - it was found that they had income from their members by way of a membership fee paid weekly, and some other self-generated income.
Positive Outcome?
The outcome of the case was that Deborah received a thank you card from the group informing her that the group had been successful with their recent grant application.
